DécodeHabile
Our collection of instructional modules and stories; focusing on explicitly teaching letter sounds to French as a second language learners.
Accessing print text is an incredibly important step when learning a second language. Our truly decodable teaching materials and books offer students the ability to learn and associate letter sounds (phonemes) with the letters (graphemes) practising one combination at a time. This collection supports teachers in intentionally and explicitly teaching phoneme-grapheme correspondence without high frequency words. As modules progress, each builds upon the previous module, only including letters previously taught. Students never encounter a sound-letter combination they haven’t already learned which builds their confidence and abilities in reading.
It is important to also note here that DécodeHabile is not a reading and writing program, but a support and a collection of texts. It is a supplementary resource to provide practice following systematic, explicit and intentional teaching of grapheme-phonemes and phonological awareness. Teachers will need to provide instruction and additional practice in encoding.
You are going to love the ready-made materials following a very intentional progression.
FSL Students are going to love being able to decode and understand what they are reading!
Our Story
Welcome! We’re Antonia Cetin and Jessica Onuoha, experienced French as a second language teachers and curriculum coaches. Combined we have taught from Kindergarten to Grade 10 in French as a second language in various Ontario programs. We are convinced that decodable text written at students’ language learning level can help students to read fluidly, pronounce the words they are reading correctly, and understand what they are reading. And, we’re here to share our DécodeHabile grapheme-phoneme progression conceived specially for FSL learners, our progressive series of lessons for each new phoneme-grapheme combination introducing truly decodable text, and or truly decodable stories written to correspond to these series.
We are proudly Canadian!
